Ferret

This is a small predatory animal from the weasel family. There are two types of ferrets: dark forest and light steppe. The dark ferret was bred and domesticated 2000 years ago in southern Europe. He served as a cat for a long time. It was also used for hunting rabbits. Currently, the black ferret is widespread and lives in England, Russia, Karelia, Finland and the northern forests of Africa.

Description

The ferret has valuable fur. But due to the small number of representatives of these fur-bearing animals, fishing for it is prohibited.
Outwardly, these are small animals with a long and elongated body. They have short legs and long claws. Males have a body length up to 40 cm, females up to 30 cm. The weight of males is 1.5 kg, females are 0.8 kg.

The color of the dark ferret is black-brown. The head has a pattern in the form of a mask.

The forest or dark ferret has anal glands that emit a specific unpleasant odor.

This small predatory animal living in natural conditions is capable of making various sounds reflecting its condition. These can be screams, squeaks, angry growls, barking, and contented clucking. Domesticated ferrets lose this ability.

Habitat

In the wild, ferrets usually live on the edges of forests. This allows them to easily get their own food. They love natural reservoirs, they know how to swim, although they spend a little time in the water.

These predators are attached to their habitat and never change it. They are sedentary and have their own houses. As a rule, ferrets do not dig burrows for housing. They look for someone's ready-made burrows or settle in haystacks, in rotten stumps, and if human houses are nearby, then in sheds with domestic animals.

Reproduction

Ferrets start hunting in early spring. The female walks pregnant for 1.5 months. In one pregnancy, she is able to bring 4-6 cubs. These are mammals that feed their young with milk. But the ferret is a predator, therefore, from early childhood, he teaches his little ones to eat meat.
Ferret females are good mothers, able to take care of their brood for a long time. Their care can last for a year until the pups reach puberty. Then the mothers separate them for independent living.

Feeding

The main food for the ferret is mice and voles. But he gladly eats toads, snakes, birds, large insects and water rats. If it lives near a person, it attacks poultry and rabbitries.

Thanks to the very long and sharp claws, it is not difficult for the ferret to engage in a fight with an enemy or victim, which often turns out to be larger than the attacker himself.

These are nocturnal animals. During the day they sleep in their shelters, and at night they go hunting.

Breeding

The domesticated ferret is called "furo", which is Latin for "sly". This is because ferrets are very smart and cunning. If you characterize their behavior, then you can be accused of kleptomania. Everything that the ferret likes, he drags into his house.

A home-kept ferret gets along well with all family members in the house. He is able to maintain good relationships with other pets living next to him, but only as a leader.

Mobirise

The animal is smart and understands the tasks assigned to it. He can be trained to use the tray. But it is not recommended to keep him in families with children. Having sharp teeth and claws, he is able to injure a child or bite at the time of play.
In general, the ferret's character can be called artistic. This is an actor who is able to beg for a treat, express his dissatisfaction or joy with sound. Ferrets are very cheerful and able to charge their master with this. It is very interesting to be friends with them and observe their behavior.
